Choosing mobility equipment for a child is a different job than choosing for an adult. The equipment has to fit who they are today, work with a body that's still growing, and hold up to a kid being a kid. Here's how to think it through.
Start with the day, not the diagnosis
Before looking at products, map the actual day: getting to and around school, the bus or the car, the playground, the house, visits to family. The right equipment is the one that removes the most friction from the places your child actually goes — not the one with the longest spec sheet.
Size for growth
The biggest pediatric mistake is buying for the child's size right now. Kids grow fast, and equipment that fits perfectly today can be too small in a year. Look for adjustable seat width, seat depth, and height — gear designed to grow with your child stretches your budget and avoids a frustrating re-buy.
Involve your child
A child who helped choose their equipment is far more likely to use it. Colour, style, and how it looks to their friends matter more than adults expect. Equipment that a kid is a little proud of beats “medical-looking” equipment they'd rather leave in the closet.
Think about school and the IEP
If your child is school-age, loop in the school. Many mobility needs intersect with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) — doorway widths, storage, transfers, washroom access, and who assists during the day. An occupational therapist can help match the equipment to the school environment.
Plan for reassessment
Pediatric needs change — with growth, with development, with the season. Build in a check-in every 6–12 months to confirm the fit is still right and adjust before small problems become sore spots.
